Unavailable is not quiet

Candidate tested · activation unresolved

Console candidates stopped translating a failed alert read into reassurance. Compatibility checks retained older warnings without inventing health.

Evidence scope

Historical isolated console and reload fixtures. Cross-platform receipts repeat the same suite; they do not establish activation or live Host reload.

The expanded suite had zero failures or skips in each retained platform run. It is 27 suite cases, not 54 unique acceptance checks.

Follow the evidence

Open a stage to inspect what happened.

  1. 01Reproduce false quietfailed

A failed alert read could become an empty list and render All quiet. Missing evidence was presented as observed absence.

  2. 02Keep availability and warningstested

The candidate retained the alert array with an availability flag. Older collectors kept valid warnings plus an explicit unreported state.

  3. 03Test model and reload boundariestested

Separate fixtures distinguished health from loaded-model lists and exercised ownership, cleanup and replacement without replay.

  4. 04Keep activation separatestaged

The isolated candidate remained unactivated. Exact ownership and a supported console-only activation path still needed resolution.

Controls & proof4 documented controls
  • Failed read versus quietSeparated

Only a successful empty read may claim an observed absence of warnings.

  • Unknown-to-up mutantDetected

The fixture caught optimistic state promotion; a responding unavailable status was not called a connection failure.

  • Older collector warningPreserved

A missing new availability flag did not erase a valid older warning.

  • Reload without replayFixture checked

The frozen module exercised admitted reads across replacement, not a live watcher.

Lab log — 2026-11-03

Retrospective entry prepared by Codex; work date 2026-11-03; original draft prepared 2026-11-05T19:20:07.192Z; publication edition prepared 2026-11-05T19:32:31.997Z; historical work and technical-review statements scoped to the retained receipts; publication approved by Asif; first published 2026-11-05; owner editorial review of individual technical claims is not recorded. Publication preparation did not rerun engineering operations or change private runtime.

A missing alert read was being turned into an empty list, and the console could then say “All quiet.” That is a correctness problem, not a cosmetic one: failed evidence and an observed absence of warnings need different states. The dated review isolated that path before changing any shared runtime.

The preferred two-file candidate kept the existing alert array and added an availability flag. A successful empty read could remain quiet; a failed read became unavailable. An older collector without the flag retained an explicit unreported state. An earlier nullable-array approach was rejected rather than carried forward as a second supported contract.

The independent Home-view candidate separated a dedicated model server’s health from the list of models loaded by another serving component. Its seven client-factory checks caught an optimistic unknown-to-up mutant. The wording also changed from “Unreachable” to “Unavailable,” because a responding HTTP 503 is not the same thing as a failed connection. Health evidence still did not establish answer quality.

Reload behavior was exercised with the complete frozen module and inert responses. The six checks covered exact route registration, release ownership, idempotent cleanup, replacement ordering and an admitted read completing across replacement without replay. This was source and fixture evidence; it did not prove that the live Host watched or reloaded the selected plugin.

The composed isolated worktree passed 19 checks. A subsequent compatibility review found another edge: an older collector could provide valid warnings without the new availability field. The repair kept those warnings visible alongside the unknown-state notice. Eight regression checks expanded the suite to 27, and the retained receipts record 27 passes with zero failures or skips on both Windows and Linux. These are two runs of the same suite, not 54 different acceptance checks.

The original checkout and its unrelated work were preserved. The candidate remained separate while exact ownership and a supported console-only activation path were unresolved. No candidate activation, model request or service restart is established by these tests. A clean branch and a green fixture run were not treated as a live-interface result.

What did not ship

  • The reviewed console candidate was not promoted into the shared live interface by these receipts.
  • No live Host reload, physical-phone rendering, model-quality result or general conversation/task synchronization was established.
  • The compatibility suite does not establish that every collector version or asynchronous runtime boundary is supported.

Next

After exact ownership is resolved, re-pin the reviewed targets and demonstrate one supported console-only activation with hash-bound rollback. Accept it only if a failed read remains unavailable, a genuine empty read can be quiet, older warnings remain visible and an admitted read is not replayed across replacement.

Raw telemetry

  • Initial composed worktree: 19 tests passed; the later compatibility suite expanded that same surface to 27 tests.
  • Compatibility result: 27 passed, zero failed and zero skipped on each of the retained Windows and Linux runs.
  • Home-view controls: seven checks passed; an optimistic unknown-to-up mutant was detected; the fixture receipt records zero external requests and zero provider calls.
  • The original checkout was preserved; candidate receipts record no production mutation.
